ABSTRACT

In a patriarchal society, the husband is expected to be the breadwinner, and the wife is viewed as the secondary worker in a family. Whether married men are happier with full-time employment and married women are happier with part-time or non-employment is worth exploring. This study analyzes the associations between married men’s and women’s working hours and their happiness using panel data from the Taiwan Panel Study of Family Dynamics. This study also examines the effects of married men’s and women’s working hours on their spouses’ happiness. The findings indicate that both married men and women are happier with full-time employment than with part-time or non-employment. In addition, married women care about their spouses’ working hours, while there is no significant effect found on the men’s side. Possible explanations and implications of the findings are discussed in this study.
